Lily James’s Updo Is a Work of Art. Halley Brisker X GHD

How Halley created the look for Lily James

Who else loved this look on Lily, Monday night! She looked radiant on the red carpet wearing Rodarte.

Her hair was a beautiful mix of classic and modern elements. The sleek chignon was so elegant and chic, yet the bow was playful and fun. Then there were those gorgeous oriental flourishes and micro fishtail braid that added just enough drama to the style without being too much for her face shape. We loved it!

Beginning with your prep, work through your favourite blow-dry balm from damp before creating a pin sharp centre parting, using the ghd Tail Comb and Detangling Comb.

  1. Blow out the hair using ghd Helios Hairdryer and with the brush type best suited to your hair taking medium size sections – for Lily I used the ghd Paddle Brush. I also like to maximise shine over the hair at this stage using the ghd Gold Styler.

  2. Part your hair from ear to ear across the top of the head and using ghd Perfect Ending Hairspray pull the back section in to a tight ponytail to ensure the hair will follow the angle of the cheek bones, and lock in with a hooked bungee elastic.

  3. Take one side of the front section and using your hairspray saturate the hair and pull it back, securing this section on to ponytail with an elastic bobble; repeat on the other side. You should now have a really tight, centre parted snatched look with a ponytail left to work with. If you have particularly straight hair I like to take the ghd Curve Soft Curl Tong to give some natural movement to the ponytail and help you work in to shape.

  4. Take a 1-inch section on the underside of the ponytail and create a braid (I chose a fishtail for Lily). Keep this separate for now, and secure with a small elastic. Separate the rest of the ponytail and twist each section around in to a shape that feels aesthetically pleasing before pinning in place. You can then take your braid from earlier and snake through your twists to your liking.

  5. To elevate this look I made a bow from hair extensions but you could swap this out for a velvet bow clip for ease. A perfect look for party season! Finish with a misting of ghd Perfect Finish Hairspray.
