Chanel Métiers d’Art 2023

The show was full of life, joy, music and textural delights that left us wanting more. "Salam Alaikum Africa!" So sang Obree Daman, flanked by dancers from the École des Sables at the start of what will surely go down as a milestone Chanel Métiers d'Art show both for the house that presented it and the country that hosted it.

Chanel's inaugural show in Africa was an ambitious move.

The fashion giant made history today, when it presented its first-ever show in Africa—and simultaneously the first show to be presented by any European or US house anywhere in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The lion motif that reappeared on jewellery and bags was a dual reference to the emblem of Senegal and the sign of Coco Chanel. It was all about authenticity for this collection: The beading materials, patterns, and colours were rooted in source material from Africa, which included Talking drums and surfboards as talismanic symbols of place and connection. The broader context was 1970s-inflected: casual, unpretentious, and free.

If you're looking for some fresh hair inspiration, look no further. The models at the show had a wide range of styles that can be applied to your everyday life.

The models hair was either left free to move naturally with a centrepart and healthy finish or swept up into a braided knot. Cornrows and Afro textures where the stars of the show. We loved how the house embraced it’s surroundings. Makeup was soft neutral tones enhancing the face structure and each models individual beauty with a splash of gold on the eye and peachy gloss on the lips.

And so it went—a conversation that will continue, as long as people are willing to talk about it, and talk about the issues it raises.

Directed by the students from the Kourtrajmé film schools, which were founded by Ladj Ly in Dakar and Montfermeil, this third episode in a four-part series documents the backstage effervescence of the show: preparation of models, arrival of the guests at Dakar’s former Palais de Justice and finale of the show with Virginie Viard.

Opening credits of this episode include a photograph by Malick Bodian - headdresses styled by Jenke Ahmed Tailly.
